LEADING DRM SHORTWAVE IMPLEMENTATIONS

Integrated DRM Solutions

True to its tradition of combining innovative technology with reliable and time-tested techniques, Thomson is offering an enhanced and upgraded shortwave line for integrated DRM solutions.

The revolutionary, new Thomson 500 kW shortwave transmitter, TSW 2500 D, enables broadcasters to choose between classical AM Analog and/or DRM Digital operation.

Market leader for 100 to 500 kW power level since the early 90'ties, Thomson high power shortwave systems are based on field-proven equipment enhanced by modern technology and know-how.

An invaluable asset for any high power broadcast station, the TSW 2500 D is designed to fit a wide range of consumer specific equipment and sub-systems especially designed and engineered by Thomson to make day-to-day broadcasting more efficient.

The TSW 2500 D is equipped with interfaces for remote and automated operation and is ready for new age digital transmission (DRM).

Renowned for its superior qualities, high overall efficiency, sophisticated remote control facilities and rugged, day-to-day reliability, the new digital TSW 2500 D is the best choice for long-term, flexible operation.

Features of the TSW 2500 D especially adapted for DRM include:
Radio Frequency Stages

The TSW 2500 D is fitted with a small triode in grounded grid configuration as driver circuit for the final stage tetrode. The preliminary amplifier is a semiconductor wideband design.

Stratus, the new Thomson digital versatile Modulator/RF Exciter serves as radio frequency source.

The Stratus can handle analog and digital transmission modes. It accepts a DRM/DI (Digital Radio Mondiale/Distribution Interface) data stream.

TSW 2500 D goes Digital

DRM is bringing a bright new future for AM broadcasting. Who could have imagined 10 years ago that it would be possible today to reach listeners beyond thousands of kilometers around the globe with crystal clear sound in near FM quality!

Attractive options for broadcasters and listeners are revitalizing keen interest in short wave services. As one of the most cost-effective, reliable technologies in the world, AM radio broadcasting is still the favored medium for keeping millions of listeners informed.

ARCHITECTURE & ENVIRONMENT

FLEXIBLE, DEPENDABLE AND TIME-TESTED

PSM - Thomson Solid State Modulator

At the heart of every TSW 2500 D is a Thomson solid-state Pulse Step Modulator (PSM). Based on robust and straightforward design, the Thomson PSM has been often copied, but never surpassed.

More than twenty years of field experience with PSM technology guarantee that the Thomson PSM modulator is the top-of-the-line, offering
The PSM is equipped with 48 power modules, designed as 24 dual modules. Each of the 48 modules represents an individual voltage source that can be switched on or off independently of each other. The dual switching modules are available in either forced air or water cooled version and are capable of 90 A peak current and 1150 V output level.

Enhanced Transmitter Control System

ECOS2 (Enhanced COntrol System) is the new computer based transmitter control system for all Thomson shortwave transmitters. The system is available with or without DRM functionality.

ECOS2 controls and monitors all processes inside the transmitter and provides clearly visible and audible alarm notifications. It provides a simple and well-structured user interface on the integrated color touch screen monitor. ECOS2 allows operators to control the transmitter either locally or from a remote PC. Remote access by FTP is also supported.

The ECOS2 Human Machine Interface (HMI) provides.
ECOS2 is based on a well proven industrial PC. This allows modren functionality such as network or USB connectivity, to be combined with the high reliability and availability of service to which Thomson customers are accustomed.

ECOS can be integrated into Thomson StationMaster Control Systems, as well as into third party control systems. The industry standard SNMP agent and FTP protocols are also supported.

Automatic Tuning System

The automatic tuning system has been designed according to latest developments in control technology. A large number of preset values enable quick and reliable coarse positioning. The algorithm required for fine positioning has been redesigned with reference to the latest realizations in control technology.

Consistent use of the possibilities offered by modern microprocessor technology and innovative engineering have resulted in a flexible and reliable tuning system. This comprises storage as well as evaluation of previous tuning data and the optimization of the actual tuning state during operation.
